A surprise entrant for Anime of the Year this summer is Takopi’s Original Sin. It wasn’t on my radar for the summer list. The series is short, being only 6 episodes. The series is produced by Enishiya. Yoshiaki Fujisawa is directing the series.
Taizan 5 originally wrote and illustrated Takopi’s Original Sin as a Japanese web manga, which Shueisha’s Shonen Jump+ published from December 2021 to March 2022.
– Just a warning about this show / manga. It covers topics like bullying, abuse and violence. –
Synopsis
Takopi travels from his home of Happy Planet to spread happiness across Earth, but meets the unsmiling Shizuka upon landing. Her friends at school and home life seem to be the source of her somber expression and the pure-hearted Takopi is determined to change things for the better! But what truths await him when the curtains rise in this shocking drama?! (Shueisha)

Why I Think Takopi’s Original Sin is a Contender for Anime of the Year

There aren’t many anime that cover hard hitting topics like Takopi’s Original Sin. It feels a bit awkward watching an anime that is so heart wrenching. It’s extra sad too since it’s such a real thing that can happen to anybody (the bullying / abuse aspect… not the alien).
One of the top reasons I think it will be in contention for Anime of the Year is because of the characters. I would say there’s also a bit of mystery in the characters and story. ‘How did they come to be the way they are’, or ‘why did Takopi choose this certain person over another’. Even the title causes some mystery, ‘what is Takopi’s original sin that he committed?’.
The characters have depth to them, which is really interesting since these are school children. From what I’ve watched, all the children have clear motivation for all their actions. The story lays it all out to the audience.
The writing is really good so far (as of writing this there are 5 episodes out). I’m not sure how the story will end, as the next episode will be the final episode.
If you’ve seen the anime Erased, the story is somewhat similar to that. But instead of the smart Fujinuma you have the happy-go-lucky Takopi.
Should You Watch It?

Again I want to mention that the anime covers topics like bullying, abuse and violence. If that isn’t your thing please avoid this anime. If you are okay with seeing those things I think this is a great anime, with amazingly written characters.
This is another anime that I should add to the great anime adaptations list.
The final episode of Takopi’s Original Sin will air on August 2, 2025 and will be available on Crunchyroll.
