Do I Think Witch Watch Has Potential?
Just a disclaimer: I haven’t read the manga at all, I didn’t know anything about it. That’s why I didn’t add it to the Best Upcoming list for Spring 2025. The announcement of the anime adaptation had people interested though.
However, I think it doesn’t based on Episode 1. Witch Watch really is a romantic-comedy, like there is a lot of it in the first episode. I do love rom coms like Blue Box, Bunny Girl Senpai, and similar anime and manga. These are anime and manga rom coms with serious moments too.
The anime I mentioned has that good balance between comedy and serious moments like the backstory of the characters or the world building. I didn’t see that kind of balance with Witch Watch Episode 1.
The character dynamic between Nico and Morihito is exactly like Gojou and Marin in My Dress-up Darling. An anime (and manga) that I thought was around average.
Who Should Watch Witch Watch?
If you really loved any aspect of My Dress-Up Darling this anime will be for you. They have a lot of similarities, just from my observation from watching the first episode.
If you need a comedy to watch now Witch Watch could be it. I did say I wasn’t going to be watching it, but I did think it was funny.
Episode 1 had more comedic than serious moments. If future episodes can make that balance it may be a good anime. But right now judging on Witch Watch episode 1, it’s going to be a skip for me. I might give it the three episode rule though, or give it another go when it finishes airing.
