August has been a busy month for anime fans in Japan. Major movie announcements, long-awaited theatrical releases, studio exhibitions and citywide collaborations have all made headlines, while some of the country’s biggest franchises are already looking ahead to autumn and beyond.

For international fans, the most interesting anime news is not always limited to what is coming to streaming platforms. Some of this month’s biggest stories are also tied directly to places you can visit in Japan, from Yokohama and Tokyo to Osaka and Nagoya.

Here are ten of the biggest anime stories from Japan in August 2026, including new releases, industry developments and real-world experiences worth keeping on your radar.

1. Two New ONE PIECE Movies Announced

ONE PIECE ended August with one of the month’s biggest announcements: two new theatrical films are on the way.

The news was revealed on August 23 following the main stage at ONE PIECE DAY’26, held at Makuhari Messe in Chiba. ONE PIECE FILM GOD VALLEY is scheduled for summer 2027, while another film, ONE PIECE FILM BAAD, is planned for 2029.

GOD VALLEY will be the first new ONE PIECE movie since ONE PIECE FILM RED, which opened in 2022. The timing is also significant. The original manga will celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2027, while 2029 will mark 30 years since the ONE PIECE TV anime began broadcasting in Japan.

Details about the stories, staff and characters are still limited, so there is plenty left to be revealed. For now, the unusual decision to announce two future films at once gives ONE PIECE fans a very long runway of major releases to look forward to.

It also makes the 2027 anniversary year especially interesting for anyone planning a future anime-focused trip to Japan, as attention around ONE PIECE is likely to grow even further as the new film approaches.

2. Madoka Magica: Walpurgisnacht Rising Finally Arrives in Japan

After years of anticipation, Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie: Walpurgisnacht Rising is finally set to open in Japan on August 28.

The film continues the Madoka Magica movie series and follows the 2013 film Rebellion. Its Japanese release has been especially anticipated after a previously planned February 2026 opening was postponed for production reasons.

The new movie will open in regular cinemas and IMAX on the same day, marking the first IMAX release in the Madoka Magica series. On August 29, special stage greetings featuring members of the voice cast will take place in Tokyo, with a live viewing broadcast to cinemas around Japan.

That makes the final weekend of August an especially good time for fans who happen to be in Japan. Even those outside Tokyo have a chance to share in part of the opening-weekend atmosphere through the nationwide live-viewing screenings, while participating IMAX cinemas offer a large-format way to experience the long-awaited sequel.

3. The Chiikawa Movie Surges Past ¥11 Billion at the Japanese Box Office

Chiikawa may look small and cute, but its first movie has become one of Japan’s biggest theatrical hits of the summer.

Chiikawa the Movie: The Secret of Mermaid Island opened on July 24 and passed ¥10 billion in box-office revenue after just 30 days. By August 24, the total had already climbed past ¥11 billion, with 7.66 million admissions reported.

The movie is based on the longer “Siren” story by creator Nagano and is the first theatrical film for the franchise. Its performance is another sign of just how enormous Chiikawa has become in Japan.

For visitors who only know Chiikawa from social media or character goods, the film’s success offers useful context: this is far from a niche mascot series in Japan. Chiikawa is one of the country’s defining character franchises right now, and its first movie has turned that popularity into a major box-office event.

The film has also continued to encourage repeat visits with theater promotions, visitor bonuses and special screenings, helping keep it visible well beyond its opening weekend.

4. Fate/strange Fake Gets a New Anime Series

Fate fans received another major update this month when Aniplex announced that a new Fate/strange Fake anime series is officially in production.

The announcement was made on August 22 during the Fate/strange Fake panel at Anime NYC in New York. A new promotional video and teaser visual were unveiled at the same time.

Fate/strange Fake, based on the light novel series by Ryohgo Narita, takes the familiar Holy Grail War concept to the fictional American city of Snowfield. The anime has already expanded the Fate universe with a large cast of Masters and Servants and a deliberately irregular version of the Grail War.

There is no release date for the new series yet, but the announcement confirms that the adaptation will continue. The fact that the news was revealed at Anime NYC also underlines how international the audience for Fate has become, even when the production itself remains rooted in Japan.

For fans following the wider Fate franchise, it is one of the clearest signs this August that another major anime project is already moving forward.

5. Tokyo Revengers Returns With the War of the Three Titans Arc

Tokyo Revengers is preparing for its next major chapter. On August 24, the official anime website confirmed updated broadcast and streaming details for the War of the Three Titans Arc.

The new installment will begin broadcasting in Japan on October 2 on MBS, TBS, CBC and other networks. It will also stream on Disney+ as an exclusive worldwide subscription streaming release outside mainland China.

A fourth promotional video was released alongside the latest information, showing Takemichi returning to the past once again as he tries to save Mikey. The opening theme, “IGNITE,” is performed by JO1.

For overseas fans, the Disney+ announcement is particularly useful because it makes the international viewing route much clearer. For fans in Japan, meanwhile, the series will return to television as part of the busy autumn anime season.

With only a little over a month between the August update and the October premiere, Tokyo Revengers is one of the major returning titles to watch this fall.

6. Jujutsu Kaisen Takes Over Yokohama for Its 5th Anniversary

Few stories this month connect anime and travel as directly as Jujutsu Kaisen’s fifth-anniversary celebrations in Yokohama.

Throughout August, the series has spread across the city through photo spots, limited collaboration campaigns and special experiences. Character displays have appeared at locations including Yokohama Chinatown, Yokohama Marine Tower, World Porters and the Yokohama Air Cabin.

The giant Cosmo Clock 21 Ferris wheel at Yokohama Cosmo World is also running special Jujutsu Kaisen illuminations on selected evenings through August 31.

The celebrations build toward Jujutsu Festival 2026, a two-day fifth-anniversary event at K-Arena Yokohama on August 29 and 30. The program includes live voice acting, music performed by a special band and appearances from cast members and theme-song artists. Paid international streaming is also available for both days.

The collaboration also shows how anime events in Japan increasingly extend beyond a single venue. Rather than asking fans to visit only one exhibition or concert, the Yokohama campaign encourages them to explore multiple parts of the city, turning ordinary sightseeing spots into temporary destinations for Jujutsu Kaisen fans.

For fans visiting Yokohama in late August, this is much more than a single event. The collaboration turns parts of the city itself into a temporary Jujutsu Kaisen trail, making it one of August’s strongest examples of how anime fandom and sightseeing can overlap in Japan.

7. MAPPA Celebrates 15 Years With a Major Tokyo Exhibition

MAPPA turned 15 this year, and the animation studio is preparing a large exhibition in Tokyo to look back at its work so far.

MAPPA EXPO 15th Anniversary will open at YURAKUCHO MUSEUM on September 16 and run through December 7 before later touring other cities in Japan. In August, MAPPA revealed more details about the exhibition and confirmed a lineup of 23 titles.

Among the featured works are Jujutsu Kaisen, Attack on Titan The Final Season and Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc, alongside titles from across the studio’s 15-year history. The exhibition will include dedicated displays and original merchandise, while general ticket sales for the first part of the Tokyo run began on August 8.

For anime fans visiting Tokyo this autumn, the exhibition offers a rare studio-focused attraction rather than an event built around just one franchise.

It is also an opportunity to see how one of Japan’s most internationally recognized contemporary animation studios presents its own creative history.

8. Studio Ghibli Classics Return to Japanese Cinemas in 4K IMAX

Studio Ghibli is bringing two beloved films back to Japanese cinemas in newly supervised 4K digital remasters.

On August 17, the studio announced that Whisper of the Heart and The Secret World of Arrietty will receive limited IMAX screenings from October 23 to November 2. The films will then expand to cinemas across all 47 prefectures from October 30 to November 12, with selected Dolby Cinema screenings also planned.

The remasters are designed to bring out more detail in the films’ artwork and environments, from the everyday landscapes and imagined fantasy scenes of Whisper of the Heart to the miniature-scale world of Arrietty.

Japan has recently given several classic Ghibli films renewed theatrical life through premium-format screenings. For international visitors, these rereleases create a special opportunity: instead of only visiting a Ghibli-related attraction, fans can experience a classic Ghibli film inside a Japanese cinema, on a large screen, in a newly restored presentation.

9. Universal Studios Japan Reveals New Anime Collaboration Goods for Its 25th Anniversary

Universal Studios Japan is mixing Japanese anime with classic movie attractions for a new set of 25th-anniversary collaboration goods.

Announced on August 25, the lineup pairs ONE PIECE with Jurassic Park and Detective Conan with Back to the Future. A third collaboration brings horror manga icon Tomie together with the park’s Street Zombies. The special merchandise is scheduled to go on sale at Studio Style inside Universal Studios Japan on September 9.

The combinations are deliberately playful. Official artwork for the ONE PIECE collaboration, for example, shows Luffy in the Jurassic Park area with a huge T-Rex nearby. For Detective Conan, the crossover connects one of Japan’s longest-running anime franchises with one of Hollywood’s most recognizable time-travel films.

USJ has long been a major stop for anime fans visiting Osaka, with seasonal events based on Japanese franchises. In fact, the park is also running ONE PIECE Premier Summer 2026 through November 19, so the new anniversary merchandise arrives during an already anime-heavy period at USJ.

For overseas visitors, the timing is useful as well. The new merchandise launches just as Japan moves into the autumn travel season, giving fans who are already planning Osaka itineraries an easy way to combine a major theme park visit with limited-time anime shopping and seasonal entertainment.

These collaborations add another reason to look closely at the park’s limited-time offerings this autumn, especially for visitors interested in the unusual mix of Japanese pop culture and Hollywood entertainment that USJ does particularly well.

10. World Cosplay Summit Brings Fans From Around the World to Nagoya

August began with one of Japan’s biggest international cosplay gatherings.

The World Cosplay Summit 2026 ran from July 31 to August 2 across central Nagoya, with venues including Oasis 21, the Aichi Arts Center and the Osu shopping district.

Representatives and participants from 40 countries and regions took part, while the main Oasis 21 venue recorded approximately 259,000 visits during the event.

The World Cosplay Championship was won by the Hong Kong team, whose performance was based on Monster Hunter. Canada finished second and Brazil third.

More than a competition, the summit shows how strongly Japanese pop culture is connected to international travel and exchange. Cosplayers, photographers and fans gather in the middle of Nagoya rather than inside a closed convention venue alone, making the city itself part of the experience.

There is also a notable change ahead: organizers have already announced that the 2027 event will move to November, making 2026 the finale of the summit’s traditional midsummer format.

What to Watch Next

September will keep that momentum going. MAPPA EXPO opens in Tokyo, USJ’s new anniversary goods arrive in Osaka, and the autumn anime season is getting closer.

We will be back next month with another roundup of the biggest anime news, releases and experiences from Japan.
