With the summer anime season coming to an end, I’ve compiled the top and best anime of summer 2024. The anime I’ve listed here I have finished or plan to watch. This list is in no particular order.
Next is the fall season of 2024, I’ve already compiled the highly anticipated anime of that season.
Top Summer 2024 Anime:
Oshi no Ko Season 2
Genre: Drama, Mystery
Aqua seeks revenge while exploring the shady side of the entertainment industry with his twin sister, Ruby. Ruby wants to be an idol like her late mother. Aqua joins a famous theater group to learn about his father.
I’m updated with the manga of Oshi no Ko, but to be honest I forget what happens in this arc. Seeing the fan reactions on social media though, it must be getting to the climax of the story.
Alya Sometimes Hides Her Feelings in Russian
Genre: Romance, Comedy
Alya is a transfer student who’s quickly become popular at her new high school. She often keeps her distance from others, but she excels in her studies. The only exception is when she unexpectedly flirts with her classmate, Kuze Masachika, in Russian. What she doesn’t know is that he understands Russian.
This was my personal best anime of summer 2024. I am up to date with the manga of this anime.
This anime season has a lot of RomComs. But I would say this is the second best of the genre this season.
Seeing it animated was a treat. I’m surprised they could find a voice actress who can speak both Japanese and Russian.
There is a lot of fan service though, so If you aren’t into that it might be best to skip this one. The anime ends awkwardly, however they have already announced a second season.
Tower of God Season 2
Genre: Action, Adventure, Drama
Ja Wangnan is stuck on the 20th Floor and has failed to advance multiple times, but he never gives up. During his quest, he meets a mysterious and powerful character named Viole. Wangnan invites Viole to join his team of Regulars, and together they face new challenges at every turn.
I remember watching season one of Tower of God, there has not been a character I despise more than Rachel. I honestly wanted to hit my screen when ‘that’ happened.
This new season currently runs with episode 13 airing as I write this article, and it will feature 26 episodes.
When this is complete, I will be marathoning it, and hopefully Bam gets his justice he deserves.
Wistora: Wand and Sword
Genre: Action, Adventure
Will, a dedicated boy, enrolls in a magic academy to become a great sorcerer. However, he has one problem: he can’t use magic. Despite the cold looks from his classmates and teachers, he stays determined.
While he can’t wield a wand, he can fight with a sword as he strives to succeed in a world dominated by magic. He just needs to trust his own strengths and keep a promise he made to someone special.
I actually don’t know anything about this anime. I see it discussed a lot though on posts and threads.
My Deer Friend Nokotan
Genre: Comedy
Koshi Torako appears to be the perfect honor student, but no one knows about her secret delinquent past. Her peaceful school life gets disrupted when she meets Shikanoko Noko, a girl with antlers. A girl with antlers, Shikanoko Noko, disrupts her peaceful school life.
This anime is one of those “brain rot” comedy anime, similar to Asobi Asobase and Azumanga Daioh. This anime is a meme generator from what I’ve seen.
Personally have not watched it yet, but I do plan to. But f you still aren’t convinced to watch it, you need to hear the opening theme.
Makeine: Too Many Losing Heroines!
Genre: Romance, Comedy
Kazuhiko Nukumizu is a high school boy who prefers to stay in the background. However, everything changes when he sees his popular classmate, Anna Yanami, get dumped by her childhood friend. Feeling the urge to comfort her, he soon finds himself caught up with other girls who have also faced heartbreak.
Many fans say this anime is the surprise of the season. As I’m writing this article I’ve only watched nine episodes. For a RomCom I would rate it about average. It starts slow though, so you might want to give it a couple episodes before you drop it.
Suicide Squad ISEKAI
Genre: Action, Adventure
In the crime-filled city of Gotham the head of A.R.G.U.S., has gathered a team of infamous criminals for a daring mission. Harley Quinn, Deadshot, Peacemaker, Clayface, and King Shark are sent into an otherworldly realm connected by a gate. A land of swords and magic filled with rampaging orcs and soaring dragons.
I’m more of a Marvel fan than DC. But I don’t see any Marvel superheroes getting an anime any time soon. This will do for now.
Despite the ratings this anime has, the plot of DC heroes getting isekai’d seems interesting.
Pseudo Harem
Genre: Romance, Comedy
Eiji Kitahama joins the drama club, hoping to create a harem like the ones in his favorite manga. Meanwhile, underclassman Rin Nanakura develops a crush on him and tries out different personas to win his heart. No matter how she acts, her feelings for Eiji only deepen.
This is the best RomCom of the season. I read this manga many years ago, and I thought it was good and was surprised with how good the anime was.
I thought it would be difficult for the voice actor of Rin since having to voice different personas seems difficult. But the studio got Saori Hayami to voice Rin, and she is one of the best voice actresses in the business.
Days With My Step Sister
Genre: Slice of LIfe, Romance
When Yuta Asamura’s father remarries, he finds himself living with his new stepsister. The most popular girl in his grade, Saki Ayase. Both carrying the wounds of their parents’ divorces, they promise to keep their distance. However, as they bond over shared experiences, their cautious friendship begins to deepen.
‘Step sister’ anime does not have the best reputation to a general audience. I do tend to agree, but I remember watching a show called My Stepmom’s Daughter is my Ex, it has a terrible title. However it was actually wholesome. This seems like it might be similar in terms of wholesomeness.
Shoshimin: How to Become Ordinary
Genre: Slice of Life, Mystery
Jougarou Kobato has a bad habit of doing “wisdom work” or playing detective. It led to a bad middle school experience. Now entering high school, he and Yuki Osanai made an agreement to become ordinary students from then on.
As they go through their new life as high schoolers they attempt to keep their promise. But the duo get into mysterious scenarios which leads them to not being able to fulfill their promise.
I have a full review of this anime, if you are interested to read that click here.
Kimi ni Todoke: From Me to You Season 3
Genre: Romance, Drama, Comedy
Summertime for Sawako Kuronuma and Shouta Kazehaya as their love blossoms. They share quality moments in summer school, and meet each other’s parents. All while navigating the self-doubt and emotional challenges that come with their new relationship.
Yet another romance anime this season. One of the most famous romances of all time.
I’ve only watched the first season, but all seasons have good ratings.
The Elusive Samurai
Genre: Action, Adventure
In 1333, the Kamakura shogunate falls apart. A trusted vassal, Ashikaga Takauji, betrays them and starts a rebellion.
Houjou Tokiyuki, the true heir, escapes the massacre with a Shinto priest named Suwa Yorishige. They travel to Kamakura. On the run and determined to survive, Tokiyuki begins his plan to reclaim his birthright.
I saw a clip of this around July, and the animation looks so good. It’s what everyone discusses when mentioning this anime. I’m watching this anime purely for the animation.
Senpai is an Otokonoko
Genre: Drama, Comedy, Romance
Makoto Hanaoka’s life is about to get more complicated. Saki Aoi, a lively and confident girl, has confessed her love for him. When he doesn’t feel the same, Saki declares she will make him her first love.
Another manga I’ve read and I thought this manga was alright. It was nothing amazing. The story is a wholesome, feel good type of story.
But I do remember someone recommended reading the first chapter blind. Meaning that I shouldn’t read the synopsis or anything about the story.
When I did end up reading the first chapter, it actually surprised me and caught me off guard. I was not expecting that twist. So I recommend watching this pilot episode blind. The synopsis above doesn’t spoil that twist.
A movie was recently announced, so that will probably conclude this story.
Best Anime of Summer 2024
These were my personal best anime of Summer 2024. This was a season of many romance anime, but there were a couple good action and adventure anime. The upcoming fall season has a lot of must-watch anime as well, such as Blue Box that you do not want to miss.
