It’s been six years since the release of Death Stranding, a video game by the legendary Hideo Kojima.
If you don’t know who Hideo Kojima is, he is the creator of the greatest stealth video game of all time: Metal Gear.
One of my favourite single player games of all time is Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, but the entire Metal Gear Solid franchise is amazing. I personally haven’t played Death Stranding, but if Hideo Kojima created it, I know the game is good.

Since ‘leaving’ Konami and becoming independent, Kojima has been wanting to branch out of video games.
He’s always been vocal about blending the lines between story games and film. If you’ve played his games before you know Kojima loves to be cinematic about everything. Sometimes the cutscenes take longer than the gameplay. Kojima has been doing that with his recent game Death Stranding.
Death Stranding as an Anime (and other media forms)
There are no specific details regarding a Death Stranding anime as of now. It was a brief comment made by Hideo Kojima in an interview with Vogue Japan.
He said that he wants Death Stranding to be one of the first games to blur the line between films and video games. He grew up in an era with no video games, his only form of entertainment was novels and films. That’s why Kojima is pushing so hard for it to be put into different platforms.
We’ve seen video games turn into different forms of media before. Netflix’s release of Devil May Cry is a recent example. Another would be the entire Pokémon franchise, which is widely loved.
Live Action

A live-action of the game is in the works already. A24 will be producing the live-action, while Michael Sarnoski will be directing it. Sarnoski gained recognition for directing Pig and A Quiet Place: Day One.
Hideo Kojima won’t direct the film but stays involved through his studio, Kojima Productions. Kojima aims to make the film stand alone and earn recognition at top festivals like Cannes or Venice.
He mentioned HBO’s The Last of Us as a good example of keeping the plot from the video game. But he also mentioned Warner Bros Super Mario Bros as something that is just a ‘service to game fans’. If you’ve seen that film, you’ll know what he means.
More from Hideo Kojima

In addition to the film and anime, fans have Death Stranding 2: On the Beach to look forward to. Set to release on June 26, 2025, the sequel brings back familiar faces like Sam Porter Bridges (Norman Reedus) and Fragile (Léa Seydoux), while introducing new characters portrayed by Elle Fanning and George Miller.
Kojima has reworked the narrative of the original game to reflect the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, promising a fresh yet familiar experience.
