The Beginning After the End (TBATE) is an American web novel that recently got an anime adaptation. The series is written by ‘TurtleMe’. In 2017 TBATE received a WebToon adaptation, ‘Fuyuku23’ illustrates it.
In October of 2024 during New York Comic Con the announcement of an anime adaptation was made. Studio A-Cat would be producing the adaptation, while Keitaro Motonoga would be directing it. Finally on April 2, 2025 the first episode aired. However with recent backlash of the animation, fans have been wanting a redo of the anime already.
What’s Wrong With the TBATE Anime?
The animation is terrible. I saw a video online that showed that the web novel had more frames and movement than the anime. Looking at who produced the anime, Studio A-Cat, it isn’t that surprising. They don’t have any ‘hit’ anime other than Battle Game in 5 Seconds.
However, creator TurtleMe chose Studio A-Cat himself. Stating in an interview, that they were the only studio that would allow him to share his insights.
In a Reddit Post TurtleMe states that he didn’t realize though that in the anime industry, creators rarely have any ‘say’ in the adaptation. So even though Studio A-Cat allowed TurtleMe to share his insights, it didn’t mean that they would implement his ideas.
Online Opinions
Fans haven’t been quiet about sharing their opinions online. Everywhere from Reddit to X, fans have been sharing their want for a redo. It came to a point where a petition on change.org was created by fans to redo the TBATE anime.
Will this do anything? Probably not, I’m not sure why fans think the Studio A-Cat would throw away money like that.
On the Subreddit dedicated to the Light Novel and the one dedicated to the manga, fans have been posting so many memes about the anime. It’s been so bad that TurtleMe said he felt he needed to speak. All the fans should be respectful because everyone on the team in Studio A-Cat are trying their best.
Should You Watch The Beginning After the End?
No, I don’t think so, it’s better off reading the web novel. But, it is only 3 episodes in as of writing this article. If it somehow gets better in the later episodes, it may be worth watching.
It’s unfortunate that the last three anime I’ve written about (Moonrise & Witch Watch) have been skippable. Hopefully this anime season gets better.
