Recent news suggests that Nintendo is indeed working on the Nintendo Switch 2 and plans to release it in 2024. This information leaked from documents resulting from legal discussions between the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and Microsoft.
In a 153-page document about the FTC’s case against Microsoft buying Activision Blizzard, something surprising comes up on page 92. It states, “Nintendo plans to release a successor to the Nintendo Switch earlier this year.” Though exciting, we should take this revelation with a grain of skepticism because it’s not an official statement from Nintendo.
What We Know So Far:
As of now, specific details about the Nintendo Switch 2 remain scarce. VGC’s report states that the system is still in development, and Nintendo’s president, Shuntaro Furukawa, has remained tight-lipped about the project.
The first rumors about the Nintendo Switch 2 started with talks of a “Nintendo Switch Mini” and a “Nintendo Switch Pro” in January of 2019. However, Furukawa denied the possibility of a successor to the Nintendo Switch. In May 2023, Sharp CEO Robert Wu confirmed that the company was producing LCDs for Nintendo’s latest gaming consoles, including the rumored Nintendo Switch 2. Ubisoft’s CEO, Yves Guillemot, also hinted at upgrading games to suit new systems, including Nintendo’s.
